In the Middle Ages, Burg Schnellenberg secured the Heidenstraße, which passed by it and connected Cologne with Kassel. Around 1220 the castle was built by the archbishops of Cologne, since 1594 it has been owned by the von Fürstenberg family. The castle was extended in the 17th/18th century to its present appearance and is the largest castle complex in Südwestfalen. Today, Burg Schnellenberg houses a four-star hotel.
