Bamenohl originally consisted only of the medieval nobleman's residence Haus Bamenohl and four farms. The oldest documented reference to date dates back to 1324. It was only after the construction of the railroad in 1861 that the village developed, in particular due to the lime works and the rolling mill located there and in the surrounding area. Their need for workers led to a strong population growth, which also made Bamenohl an economic center in the municipality of Finnentrop.
